Dickies at Work The Conservation Corps As a young boy, I looked around, before starting my career, thinking before I moved, it was time to make my legs world. Make a stint in the Army? It was peacetime (shows how long it was?) And to make the National Guard just to say you did it seemed a kind of poor choices. Join the Peace Corps and make a passage in another country? Perhaps, but like a slightly deeper engagement, and anyway if I did not love politics? I found myself halfway between and went for the California Conservation Corps, also known as the CCC.
Overall, it seemed right. I was still time to start a career, did a great job for my country, I travel throughout the state, and virtually every acre of forest land he had, and even got to ride a pair of wildfires. It was half vacation, jobs, and half with the scoreboard during the adventure. My second year I buckled down, and my training career began anyway.
Dresses Corps members so they can not forget that they are in a program started during the New Deal in a democratic society. All uniforms are Dickies, brown trousers with shirts Tan, all the way through the ranks, with only colored hats as the only sign of rank. The rows of color hat track blue, green, red, yellow, orange, white and black. There is only one "honor" black hat and white hat is a center director.
The California Conservation Corps works closely with State departments such as California Department of Forestry and Caltrans. If you visit Yosemite and take a path in the mountains, chances are good that a reduction of the CCC crew lying. Or if you see a hill of land that has been the erosion is the sprouting of shoots that help conserve the landscape, which could have been any work CCC. The CCC is also the most relief when needed, in case of floods, earthquakes, hurricanes and wildfires. If you've heard of "non-riders" who go into a forest fire by helicopter to fight, they are also generally recruited from the ranks of the CCC.
As such, CCC is a good leg in a career of public service for the state government. It also offers vocational training in a variety of areas, and some paid while attending college. This is a good pit stop for young adult, seeking an adventure before settling into auto loans and mortgages suburban life.
It does not mean that it is fantastic. A large proportion of those who join at a screw-ups, but they settle after a month. The conditions are harsh, especially in projects of backcountry where you are out of camp without any contact with the outside world for months at a time. The salary ... hey, I said I deliberated between this and the Peace Corps, right? Whatever you do, do not do this job for the money.
Uniforms Dickie. Do it for them. No, but anyway about uniforms, they can sew patches on the sleeves for all service center or you are with. This is another distinguishing feature. You keep these patches around, even after you have laid the uniforms. With your other memories, like pictures and work gloves and T-shirt that you sold the campfire.
Campfire! See, the fight against forest fires is largely a question of depriving them of fuel. Then you go into the fire and the cut line. If you're lucky and the wind is good, you have the line to go around the fire and extinguished it. If he fled, he must cut closer to the line where it is now. If you think a crew of people armed with axes chopping their way through a pine forest height for a ten mile radius are no match for a fire moving through the trees to the wind, you're right . It is impossible. And all the lights ends just like that: we do the impossible and kill the fire.
The planes and helicopters to make "drops air dumps bucket" of the slurry on the fire for delaying the FLA.
