Felted Mittens

I want to recycle wool sweaters into mittens felted wool. I've never tried this technique, so I read on felting. But what I want to know is whether you need a felting mittens model or have you felt the sweaters first, then make the mittens? And how do I get the jerseys do not completely clarify when I cut them?
