It is strongly advised to purchase glasses online. Because glasses are cheaper online than you'll ever find. While local stores rip you off like crazy.

For the measurements, if you use a site like http://www.optical4less.com they give you the measure of each eye glasses and they tailor it to your own measurements (which depends on the glasses). If you are not sure of measures, go to your local optical store and try on glasses and obtain measurements, and then go online and buy glasses.
