The M-16 has recently been updated.
M-16A2 service rifle is being replaced by the M-16A4.

The M-16A4 has a Mil-Std 1913 rail system Picattiny allowing the operator to install either optical arms or a carrying handle. The model A4 comes with a Twist 5.56x45 1x7 Mike Mike HBAR. This is a much sturdier and more robust than the model A2.

While the M16 is short of stopping power compared to the AK-47, the Ministry of Defence has instead decided in 2014 to provide the Army National Guard and Navy units with banana instead.
