Mist Village

Our skiing has ended and I distributed the last day in Banff to explore some more local attractions while my husband headed into Calgary to do some shopping. We go around 11:30 and Nigel dropped me off at the foot of the gondola in Banff. This historic attraction has been around since 1959 and the car has recently been rebuilt and reopened in 1998 and boasts a state of peak gondola system designed by a Swiss gondola construction company.

On the parking lot of the gondola, you can see a large buses with oversized wheels called "Ice Explorer". This is the type of vehicle used for transporting tourists on the famous Columbia Icefield is located between Lake Louise and Jasper National Park.

The gondola takes you from 1583 m (5,194 feet) to the base station at 2281 m (7486 feet) to the upper boundary of Sulphur Mountain in just 8 minutes. On the way I enjoyed the magnificent view of the Banff townsite, looking at the Fairmont Banff Springs.

At the top of Sulphur Mountain, is a complex of visitor services including a restaurant called the Regal Garden. Without doubt, this is a rather appropriate name because the views of Sulphur Mountain is really something to see. The gondola station at the summit also has an observation deck on the roof that features a variety of arrows indicating the directions and distances to major cities worldwide.

The one kilometer walk takes you to the interpretation of Sanson Peak is the site of the Observatory in 1903 of stone. Norman Sanson observe the time of peak Sanson for each week for 30 years and recorded his observations. Near the observatory is the foundation of a designated National Historic Site: Cosmic Ray Sulphur Mountain resort which measured cosmic radiation in the 1950s and 1960s. Along this walk there are a variety of information boards to inform you about the local flora and fauna in this unique habitat.

The brochure points gondola that you can actually meet the local wildlife such as Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep, golden-mantled squirrels, bald eagles and golden eagles. Although I did not run across the wild life, I enjoyed the majestic view of the mountains and the calm that surrounds it.

I had a small snack in the cafeteria and sat beside the bay window and looked down on the townsite of Banff. It was not quite clear one day and Cascade Mountain Top were covered in mist and cloud, but the views of Sulphur Mountain is one of the most amazing views anywhere.

After my break beautiful mountain, I took the car down - although I wondered if I had to make a snowy forest road along the mountain I saw the gondola. From the base station I went to the Banff Upper Hot Springs. The Canadian Rockies have all sorts of limestone fissures and hot springs feed water is heated by geothermal energy right through the cracks at the Banff Upper Hot Springs.

The springs were discovered in 1894 and contain water vapor loaded with minerals. Even in winter people sitting in the outdoor pool and enjoy the healing waters of the Upper Hot Springs. The bathhouse fully restored in the 1930s and also provides facilities for day spa offering massages, steam baths, aromatherapy and other facilities. A restaurant and snack bar are also in the bathroom.

One minute I was tempted to try Hot Springs, but I have not had a bathing suit with me. Although the retail store in the bathroom sells swimsuits, I decided that rather than relaxing in the hot water I'd get a little exercise and I started walking toward the city.
