The "Dead Ball" Era In Baseball Pitchers dominated the rhythm games, and several legendary pitchers made their lasting legacy during this period. Some of the most notable were Cy Young, Walter Johnson and Grover Cleveland Alexander. Partly, these people and many others were responsible for a lack of offensive production over this period, but there were other reasons.
"Dead Ball" also describes the current state of baseball, especially in the later stages of the Games after having been manipulated, distorted and altered, which was common practice at that time. Baseballs were considered expensive, and three dollars each, generally only one ball was used per game. The hardness and the aerodynamics of the ball were poor according to modern standards and so the sphere has been detrimental to the success of a hitter.
