First stop on Willie Nelson and Family Tour Willie Nelson is probably the biggest name to come into our town yet. The Willie Nelson and Family Band came to town last Friday, January 11, 2008. We live in Fort Pierce, Florida, a modest city of 40,000 people. In the process of renovating our 100 years the downtown section, the Sunrise Theatre built in 1923 became the centerpiece of the renovation. We are members of Theatre of sunrise and support us by going to shows there as often as we can. It has great acoustics and is very comfortable, seats fewer than 2,000 people.
We arrived about 45 minutes earlier for the largest crowd ever at the Sunrise Theatre. It was one of the farmers whose who, citrus farmers, lawyers, including a former sheriff and many residents have long and distinguished business people.
To be honest, the first song of Willie Nelson I've ever heard was Mamas Do not Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys. It could have been thirty-five years ago. I do not even know who he was at the time. One thing I knew was that I loved this song and became a fan Willie Nelson instantly. I can not say with any degree of truth that I was his biggest fan. I have several of his albums, and maybe I'd seen him in concert some twenty years ago here in town with Waylon Jennings and Hank Williams Jr. As always, for me Jimi Hendrix was God. Nobody came close. Until recently my range of music appreciation has been close.
Once seated, we were given flyers announcing that tonight was the start of a tour Willie Nelson and that this concert was recorded for an album. The most important message on the leaflet that we could buy a copy of the concert after the show. It was sold in a device that was shaped like a bracelet and had a USB port on a computer. It is little technology is one of the best ideas anyone ever had.
We were on the balcony, and remember a pair of binoculars is great. I like watching the hands of guitarists around. Willie may be known for his great voice, and many popular songs, but I do not think it's given enough credit for being able to play the hell out of his guitar. This is a very worn-Martin N 20WLN it called Trigger. It is available through Guitar CFMartin model as a special order Custom Shop.
Willie's sister Bobbie (Nelson) played the piano with the group and most of the original members of 30 in recent years. Bobbie piano is just a piano, which is very refreshing in a world of synthesizer keyboards. It is an excellent actor, and did some jumps solo ragtime. The concert began with Whiskey River and it was evident that his is a tight group. In addition to the sister Bobbie's piano, there was a bassist and a second guitar rhythms and leads trade with Willie. The group has not had time to setup a great drummer, just a player on the snare and bongo drums.
Most concerts I attend are generally hear and evaluate the guitar player. Johnny Winter (we've seen the last month), Robert Cray, Eric Johnson, Joe Satriani, Edgar Winter, David Allen Coe, Bob Dylan, Peter Framton, BB King, Robin Trower (next week), Jimi Hendrix (RIP # 1 my hero), SRV (RIP # 2) to name a few, and many others, I do not remember right now. Let him go on the record that Willie plays mostly all the lead guitar throughout the concert. Add to my statement: Willie plays the guitar at the highest level possible. It is a beautiful combination of country notes, notes of blues and her own musical style that is literally music to your ears. Do not underestimate his virtuosity on the guitar. He plays a few notes touching powerful soul.
It is difficult to believe that Willie Nelson is 74 years. It's good to see that, even if it is clearly and old, it seems unencumbered by any age-related suffering. He is tall and straight. There is no stoop to him, and his eyes gleamed and he smiled and havin.
